The self-proclaimed Islamic State has released a video apparently confirming the destruction of Nimrud, one of Iraq’s greatest archaeological treasures – as had been reported last month.

The city was founded in the 13th century BC, one of many sites described as the cradle of civilisation, but ISIL described it as “un-Islamic”.

The video suggests it has carried out its vow to destroy the site.
