It might have been the Democrats’ worst kept secret but now it is official – Hillary Clinton will run for president in 2016.

The wife of the former President Bill Clinton made the announcement on Sunday evening through a video on her website and on social media.

“Americans have fought their way back from tough economic times”, she says in the film. “But the deck is still stacked in favour of those at the top…everyday Americans need a champion, and I want to be that champion.”

Over the weekend President Obama was at the Summit of the Americas. Before the official announcement was made he was asked by reporters what he thinks about the prospect of another Clinton in the White House.

“I think she would be an excellent president and I’m not on the ballot paper so I’m not going to step on her lines. I’m confident that she will be very clear about her vision for the country moving forward”, said Clinton.

Hillary Clinton is currently the clear favourite to win the Democratic nomination since no significant figure has come forward to challenge her. That, of course, could change.
