Monaco survived a huge scare to qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals despite losing on the night to Arsenal.

The visitors, who needed to score at least three goals, got off to a strong start and opened the scoring in the 36th minute thanks to a clinical finish from Olivier Giroud.

Aaron Ramsey added another with 15 minutes left before the final whistle but it wasn’t to be for the Gunners as Monaco held firm to book a quarter-final spot.

Atletico Madrid also progressed but had to rely on a 3-2 penalty win to see off Bayer Leverkusen at the Vicente Calderon.

Mario Suarez broke the deadlock in the 27th minute with Diego Simeone’s men unable to double their advantage despite dominating possession.

The game ultimately went to penalties with Fernando Torres netting the winner to the delight of the home crowd.
