China’s Dongfeng Race Team produced a stunning performance to clinch the Vestas Wind In-Port Race in Sanya on Saturday.
Charles Caudrelier’s team-mates had already made history last month by becoming the first Chinese-backed crew to win a leg in the 41-year-old event, when they claimed the third stage from Abu Dhabi to China.
The Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Team, led by Britain’s Ian Walker, came home second ahead of Alvimedica and this result sees them extend their lead to four points atop the In-Port Race Series table.
Team Brunel and SCA finished fourth and fifth respectively while MAPFRE endured a disappointing day.
Xabi Fernández’s men never recovered from their poor start to the race and eventually had to settle for sixth place.
