Sri Lanka celebrates its Independence Day with the newly installed president promising to bridge the ethnic divide that still exists following the end of the countries civil war five years ago.

President Maithripala Sirisena called for a process of national reconciliation between the Sinhalese in the south and the Tamils in the north and east of the country.
