The English football association has given Mario Balotelli until Friday to explain himself following a post he made on social media which appeared to contain anti-Semitic and racist references.

The controversial Italian who has hit the headlines for wrong reasons throughout his career quickly deleted the post on instagram that had an image of Super Mario with the heading “Don’t be a racist!”

Although the text below the heading caused quite the stir.

Responding to criticism on Twitter, the misfiring Liverpool striker tweeted: “My Mom is Jewish so all of you shut up please.”

He later apologized for the post adding it was meant to be anti-racist with humour.

Balotelli could now face a five-game ban for breaching the FA’s social media rules.
