Pope Francis has canonised six new saints, including a priest and a nun from the Indian state of Kerala in a ceremony at St Peter’s Square in the Vatican.

The two Indians and four Italians who were said to have dedicated their lives to help the poor, the sick and the elderly and urged Italians to follow their example.

Some 5,000 Catholics travelled from Kerala for the event.
