A gunman has shot and wounded three people before being shot dead by police at Florida State University in Talahassee.

The man had walked into the campus library, packed with up to 400 students at the time, produced a handgun and started shooting, sparking chaos.

“There is no indication of any additional threats to the university, to the students or to our community at this time. All indications we have, based on current information, is this is an isolated incident by one person acting alone,” said Talahassee police Chief Michael Deleo.

One of the wounded was treated at the scene while the two others required hospital treatment. One is in a critical condition.

Police say they confronted the man outside the Strozier library after midnight, when he opened fire on them before being killed.
