A Spanish priest who was the first European to be diagnosed with the latest strain of Ebola has died, authorities in Madrid have confirmed.

Miguel Pajares, 75, contracted the disease in Liberia, where he had been working for an NGO. Liberia along with West African neighbours Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Guinea have been struggling to contain Ebola, which in this latest outbreak has left more than 1,000 people dead.

Pajares was airlifted out of Liberia on August 7, accompanied by a nun he had been working with in Africa. She has since tested negative for Ebola.
