Trains on Britain’s busy and profitable West Coast Mainline between London and Scotland are to be run by FirstGroup after the company outbid the current operator Virgin Rail for the franchise.

Virgin boss Richard Branson – who now plans to quit the UK rail business – warned FirstGroup’s around 7.5 billion euro bid was too high and risked pushing it into bankruptcy.
