The shock waves from Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup continue to be felt across the country as the President of the Italian National Olympic Committee, Giovanni Malago weighed into the debate on what should happen to Carlo Tavecchio, the head of Italy’s Football Federation.

“If you were to ask me, and I know this question will be coming in a second, what would I do in his (Football Federation president Carlo Tavecchio) position, I would step down. I would resign because by doing so there would be credit for something positive during this period.”

Italy was eliminated after a goalless draw against Sweden, throwing the future of Tavecchio and embattled national coach Gian Piero Ventura into doubt.

Luca Lotti, Italy’s Sports Minister said that the problems in the national side were well known,

“It wasn’t just yesterday that we discovered problems. It’s not just since the game against Sweden that we saw something was wrong. In the last two World Cups we were eliminated in the first round. The presidents of Series A and Series B have not been properly elected yet.

But in a nation of football fans, many will be asking, if the problems were known, why were they allowed to go on so long.
