The reigning four times Bundesliga champions had lost only once in the league all season heading into this fixture and that stat nearly doubled in Berlin.
Bayern, who thrashed the Gunners 5-1 in Europe last week, fell behind in the 21st minute when Vedad Ibisevic turned the ball home following a free-kick by Per Skjelbred.
As the clock ticked passed the 90-minute mark Berlin could have been forgiven for thinking all three points were theirs.
But in the sixth minute of stoppage time second half sub Robert Lewandowski took full advantage of a goalmouth scramble to prod home the equalizer and earn a share of the spoils.
The point leaves Bayern five clear of surprise package Leipzig at the top of the table.
Up and down
On the up are Leipzig who pounced on Bayern’s draw to close the gap at the top with a 2-1 victory over Borussia M’Gladbach. After 21 matchdays they are safe in second place, eight points clear of Borussia Dortmund in third.
Eslewhere in the German topflight, Anthony Modeste continued his fine form in front of goal.
The Cologne striker hit the target again in his side’s 1-1 draw with Schalke.
The goal leaves him level with Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the Bundesliga’s top scorers – both with 17.
Also on the up is former Manchester United man Chicharito, who after going goalless in 16 games in all competitions has now scored five in his last three outings for Bayer Leverkusen.
He scored his second straight double against Augsburg on Friday.
On the down this week is Bayern Munich boss Carlo Ancelotti, who is likely to face punishment by the league after putting his middle finger up at Hertha Berlin supporters. The Italian later claimed it was in response to being spat on during the match.
