President Trump says his former advisor "lost his mind" following explosive remarks in a new book

US President Donald Trump has lashed out at former ally Steve Bannon following several damaging comments made by the former White House adviser in a new book.

In a statement Trump disavowed Bannon saying he had nothing to do with his presidency and that when Bannon was fired he lost his job and his mind.

One of the most explosive claims concerns Trump's son and a meeting with a group of Russian during the 2016 election campaign.

At the time Trump Jr is said to have been offered damaging information on rival candidate Hilary Clinton - Bannon has described the meeting as "treasonous" and unpatriotic.

Bannon, speaking to author Michael Wolff, warned that the investigation into alleged collusion with the Kremlin will focus on money laundering and predicted: " They're going to crack Don Jr. like an egg on national TV".

White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabbe Sanders has been quick to undermine Bannon's claims after she was asked as a news briefing, "Did the president's son, Donald Trump Jr, commit treason?"

"I think that is a ridiculous accusation. If that is a reference to comments made by Mr Bannon, I refer you back to the ones he made previously on 60 minutes where he called the collusion with Russia about this president a total farce."

The book "Fire and Fury: Inside the White House" by Michael Wolff is reportedly based on interviews with the president and his inner circle and describes an administration lurching from crisis to crisis.
