Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont is coming under pressure to declare full independence.

Puigdemont made a declaration of independence on Tuesday only to suspend it seconds later and call for negotiations with Madrid. Hardliners from the far-left Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP) are demanding a quick break with Spain

“We believe that the only effective way to have civil and politic rights in this country is to build the catalan Republic,” said Anna Gabriel, a member of the Catalan parliament from the CUP party.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy demanded that the Catalan leader clarify whether he has declared independence, issuing a veiled threat that the central government could limit or rescind the region’s autonomy if he has.
