Clashes between riot police and referendum supporters in Catalonia

The public came out in force across Catalonia to support a referendum on independence for the region that the government in Madrid had vowed to stop.

The resulting violent clashes with riot police tasked with preventing the vote left hundreds injured, including several police officers.

Both sides blamed the other for the violence while international figures including Belgian prime minister Charles Michel condemned the scenes and called for political talks.
