Weeping for their daughters, grieving relatives have begun to bury 37 girls burnt alive in a fire that broke out in a youth shelter in Guatemala.
Women cried out ‘Why did you go?’. It’s the very question authorities are looking to answer, amid mounting criticism about conditions in the home.
Allegations have emerged that the girls were locked in a room and were unable to escape when the fire broke out.
It comes on top of reports of overcrowding, underfunding, rape and sexual abuse at the state-run home for child victims of abuse and teens with criminal records.
Under mounting pressure, the president has promised a thorough investigation into the tragedy.
