Angela Merkel, Brexit and President Trump have been the butt of people’s jokes on the penultimate day of Germany’s carnival season.

The annual parades see revellers turn out to poke fun at politicians and this year was no exception.

One float, featuring populist leaders past and present claimed, ‘‘Blond is the new brown’‘ a clear reference to the Nazi brown shirts.

Police were also out in force with the cities of Cologne, Dusseldorf and Mainz seeing Monday’s biggest street parties.

“Of course carnival always has to provoke a bit, it needs to push the envelope. I think that’s ok, carnival needs to maybe overstep a little bit,” one man said.

In Mainz, Brexit floats also featured strongly as did Trump. He was depicted as an elephant crashing through
