It’s been six years in the making, with obstacles along the way, but now France is celebrating after clinching three points in their Euro 2016 opener against Romania.

Our reporter Paula Vilaplana was in Paris.

“Olivier Giroud has the honour of being Euro 2016’s opening scorer. The French number nine’s goal and Dmitri Payet’s second one in the France-Romania match gives the host team the first three points of the tournament,” she said.

Dimitri Payet’s 89th-minute goal capped off the match with a 2-1 victory for France. It was down to the wire, as one French fan remarked:
“It was very, very hard. The end of the match was Hitchcock-esque with a goal just two or three minutes from the end. It was amazing.”

Win or lose, spirits were high among the fans in Paris.

“France is a good team,” one Romania supporter told euronews. “It’s the best team in Europe. I’m proud for Romania. 2-1 is nothing.”
