Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from Wimbledon in order to recover from a left wrist injury in time to feature at the Rio Olympics.

The Spanish 14-time Grand Slam winner also pulled out of the French Open last month.

The 30-year old left hander, who has won Wimbledon on two occasions, won gold in his only Olympic appearance in 2008.

A knee injury prevented him from defending that title in London.

To be eligible for the Rio Games, however, Nadal needs to have competed in three Davis Cup ties during the four-year Olympic cycle, he’s played twice so far.

If fit he has the chance to complete his Davis Cup quota next month when Spain take on Romania otherwise a special exemption from the International Tennis Federation will be needed for Olympic participation.
