Professor Mary Beard received the Princess of Asturias Social Sciences award in Oviedo on Wednesday.

These Awards, which have been described as Spain’s equivalent of the Nobel Prizes, cover a range of achievements in the arts, humanities, science and public affairs.

Mary Beard, who taught at Newnham College, is the chair of classics at Cambridge. She is the Classics editor of the Times Library Supplement and author of the blog “A Don’s Life”, which appears on the Times as a regular column.

Her frequent media appearances and sometimes controversial public statements have led to her being described as “Britain’s best known classicist”.
