Five Afghan migrants, including two children and a six-month-old baby, have drowned after the boat they were in hit rough weather and capsized off the Turkish coast.

Nine other people were pulled from the water alive. One of the victims managed to swim ashore, but reportedly died during attempts to revive him.

The migrants were trying to get to the Greek island of Lesbos.

More than 130,000 people have reached Europe from Turkey so far this year, according to the International Organisation for Migration – and hundreds have died while making the perilous journey.

The latest deaths come just days after the EU struck a draft deal with Turkey to curb illegal migration in return for billions of euros in aid.
