Abeba Aregawi – Sweden’s current 1500 metre indoor world champion – has been suspended from competition after returning a positive test for a banned substance.

The 25-year-old Ethiopian-born athlete, who has been competing for Sweden since 2012 failed an out-of-competition test conducted by governing body the IAAF whilst in Addis Ababa earlier this year.

The 2013 World 1500 metre champion has now requested that her B sample be tested.

The suspension means her place in the Swedish team for the Rio Olympics in August is now in doubt while it is now highly unlikely she will be eligible to defend her indoor title and the world championships in Portland Oregan later this month.
