Republican Donald Trump and Democratic Socialist Bernie Sanders have taken the New Hampshire primary. While Hillary Clinton quickly conceded defeat to Sanders, there has been a tight race for the runner-up places in the Republican contest.

Voting continued beyond the closure deadline due to a last minute surge in some districts where there was a steady turnout, even a possible record.

Polls had suggested clear front runners for both parties. Billionaire Donald Trump for the Republican field has been riding a wave of voter anger at traditional politicians.

But lagging far behind him this time has been John Kasich who looks to have clinched second place . Last week’s winner in Iowa Ted Cruz appears to be in a fight for third with Jeb Bush. Marco Rubio is in fifth position.

The Democratic favourite in New Hampshire was always Bernie Sanders. Together with his calls for change and his home advantage being the Senator for the neighbouring state, he’s delivered a punishing double-digit defeat on Hillary Clinton.

Despite starting out as the front runner for the Democratic ticket, former US Secretary of State Clinton has lost this one to Sanders in the race for the White House.
