The Mexican government has released dramatic video coverage of the raid by soldiers on a house that led the arrest of the world’s most wanted drug boss, Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman.

The Marines are seen blasting their way through the house in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, exchanging heavy gunfire with Guzman’s henchmen, five of whom were killed in the raid.

The video also shows the secret door and stairs hidden behind a mirror, down which Guzman fled before the soldiers eventually located and arrested him after he spent several hours below ground.

The footage is also an insight in to the notorious drug trafficker who seemed to like to mix truth with fiction.

The Marines found DVDs of “La Reina del Sur”, or Queen of the South – a TV series about a female drug lord. It stars Mexican actress Kate del Castilllo, the woman who led Sean Penn to interview Guzman.

The circumstances of that interview, published in Rolling Stone magazine, are now being examined by the Mexican and US authorities.

It is thought that the meeting with Penn helped the security forces to locate Guzman.

He’s wanted in the United States and the Mexican government has said it will start formal extradition proceedings, although legal experts have indicated that the process could be a lengthy one.
