The vice president of the Maldives has been arrested and charged with attempting to assassinate the president.

President Abdulla Yameen escaped unhurt after an explosion on his boat when he was returning from the Haj, but his wife and two aides were injured.

A broader political crackdown is underway on the islands, population 400,000. Recently it has seen a significant exodus of young men to fight for Islamic State in the Middle East.
