A crane has collapsed in the Muslim holy city of Mecca killing at least 87 people, according to Saudi authorities.

Some 183 more have been injured after the crane crashed down onto the
Grand Mosque, apparently smashing through the roof.

The Mosque was crowded at the time.

Emergency services are at the scene and the area has been cordoned off.

Mecca is preparing to host hundreds of thousands of people for the annual Haj pilgrimage.

Images circulating on social media show pilgrims at the site wearing robes covered in blood, surrounded by masses of debris.
