Iceland stunned the Netherland’s 1-0 in Amsterdam on Thursday to take a giant step towards qualification for next year’s European Championships in France.

The Dutch were reduced to ten men after Bruno Martins Indi was sent off in the first half.

Iceland were then awarded a penalty early in the second, which Gylfi Sigurdsson slotted home for what turned out to be the winner.

The defeat for the Netherlands marked a disappointing start to the reign of coach Danny Blind, who now has only three games remaining to turn around his side’s qualification campaign.

Only the top two teams in each group earn direct qualification while the third-place teams enter a play-off.

The Dutch are third in the Group A, six points behind Czech Republic in second and eight points behind leaders Iceland, who are now in touching distance of their first appearance in a major tournament.
