Ukraine win gold at World Fencing Championships

Ukraine has won its first team title at the World Fencing Championships in Moscow by defeating South Korea by 34 to 24.

The bronze medal went to Switzerland.

The tournament was marked by the unexpected early elimination of defending champions France.

In the women’s event, China has taken the gold medal.

The young squad, trained by Frenchman Daniel Levavasseur, beat Romania 45 to 36.

The last time the team won the world title was in 2010, with two lost finals in 2013 in Budapest against Russia and in 2011 in Catania against Romania.
