Foreign ministers meet as security situation in eastern Ukraine deteriorates

The foreign ministers of France, Germany, Ukraine and Russia have held crisis talks in Paris as the situation in eastern Ukraine continues to deteriorate.

The atmosphere on the ground is becoming more fraught with frequent ceasefire violations being reported by both sides.

Ministers insisted that the agreement to withdraw heavy weapons must be implemented.

German foreign minister Walter Steinmeier
called on the warring parties to come together:
“No one, neither France nor Germany can handle the situation, it has to be controlled by the parties involved. They have to put into practise the Minsk agreement themselves.”

The four countries said they would continue to act together in order to resolve the crisis.

The conflict in eastern Ukraine has seen relations between Russia and West chill to Cold War levels.
