Will it be Charlotte? Will it be Alice? Or Elizabeth… Victoria… Or even Diana?

Since Britain’s Duke and Duchess of Cambridge appeared with their newborn girl on Saturday, the “Great Kate Wait” for the baby to arrive has given way to a betting frenzy on what the new princess will be called.

As the family spent the rest of the weekend in the peaceful surroundings of Kensington Palace in London, what was described as ‘total mayhem’ was unfolding elsewhere as more than a million pounds was reportedly bet on the baby’s name.

Suggestions on bookies’ websites ranged from the royal favourites, to the somewhat less likely Chardonnay, Seychelles, or Posh.

Outside Buckingham Palace some well-wishers expressed a variety of opinions:

“We said on the train on the way here, Victoria.”
“Alice, we think.”
“I think Mary actually is quite a nice name.”
“I think Alice because it’s my middle name and it’s amazing,” a little girl added.

Some reports suggest the royal couple have already chosen the name for Prince George’s new sister – but won’t divulge it until after the Queen is told.

The bookies are hoping for a slightly less traditional name – otherwise they face a huge payout.
