Hot topics: The top trending stories of the summer


Facebook has just launched embedded posts across its network. The feature, which was available to selected partners since July, has been tweeked a little based on user feedback and is now available to everyone.

To celebrate the new feature we are taking a look back at euronews’ top trending stories of the summer.

1. The Chinese “dog-lion”

The story of a Chinese zoo that found internet fame for its Tibetan mastiff dog posing as a lion.

2. Train crash in Spain

A photo of the devastating train derailment near Santiago de Compostela on July 24. The crash claimed the lives of 79 people and left scores more injured.

3. Taiwan parliament brawl

A brawl broke out in Taiwan’s parliament during a debate over capital gains tax. The opposing parties were fighting for a position at the podium.

4. Barrack Obama – Picture of the day

US President Barrack Obama jokes with the NCAA women’s basketball champions. Our viewers were torn: funny joke or disrespectful gesture?

5. The royal baby

The first photos of royal baby, George Alexander Louis, who is now third in line to the British throne.

6. Bulgaria protests – No Comment

The protests were originally triggered by the controversial appointment of media business owner Delyan Peevski as the new head of the State Agency for National Security. Public anger eventually led to his removal but the demonstrations have continued for months.

7. Giant Panda

A panda in China cools off from the heat.

8. Snowden cartoon

The Edward Snowden saga started in June when nespapers revealed that the NSA had asked for millions of phone records from telecommunications company Verizon to be handed over. The whistleblower is currently in Russia after being granted temporary asylum.

9. Underwater ballet in China

Stunning photography of a Russian synchronised swimming team.

10. China suicide attempt – No Comment

This dramatic video prompted social media users to hail the brave firefighter as a hero.
