Javier Carbonell, an analyst at the European Policy Centre, says that while housing has been one of the “biggest policy failures” of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s administration, the prime minister has been able to turn it into an electoral issue.
Nevertheless, Carbonell is not sure whether it will be enough to win the snap elections called for 29 November. A possible coalition between the right-wing PP and far-right VOX could result in “a tougher position on migration” and “an increase in defence spending” for Spain.
If there is a change of government, Carbonell also predicts that Spain will move away from its divergent foreign policy and “come back to the right-wing consensus that Europe is having at the moment.”
