Police and gendarmes pushed back the crowd after some participants threw rubbish bins and other objects, prompting officers to use tear gas.

The movement began in September over staff shortages and inequalities in the education system. Students have also raised concerns about poor facilities, long school hours and uncomfortable classrooms.

It has since spread beyond the Paris region, with hundreds of schools affected by blockades, damage or attacks.

The CGT has called on workers to join the mobilisation, bringing more people onto the streets as the government faces growing pressure over the issue.
