Video showed demonstrators throwing flares, stones and firecrackers at riot police, while officers advanced through the streets and arrested several people.

Protesters also overturned and set fire to rubbish bins as police vehicles moved into the area.

The rally was part of a wider anti-corruption movement that emerged after the deadly collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad in 2024.

Serbian authorities said those involved in attacks on police would face prosecution.
