Video. Thousands of farmers protest EU, Mercosur trade deal ahead of vote

Updated:

Hundreds of farmers protested at the European Parliament in Strasbourg against the EU–Mercosur trade deal, fearing it will undercut local production.

Thousands of farmers descend on the European Parliament in Strasbourg in protest at a major trade deal signed between the 27-nation European Union and Mercosur bloc members Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, ahead of a vote on whether to refer it to the courts.

Farmers and their supporters fear the deal will cause an influx of cheaper goods produced with lower standards and banned pesticides.

The deal was signed last Saturday in Paraguay by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen but the European Parliament still has to vote on it.
