Chaos ensued at Rio's airport as Flamengo fans clashed with police while seeing off the team for the Copa Libertadores final, with accusations of late police action.

Clashes broke out near Rio de Janeiro's international airport on Wednesday as Flamengo fans gathered to see the team depart for Peru ahead of the Copa Libertadores final against Palmeiras.

The crowd grew quickly and the scene turned chaotic when dozens of supporters climbed into the team bus from the ceiling while thousands cheered outside.

Some fans pushed through a police barrier, prompting officers to use tear gas as objects were thrown at them. It took more than an hour to clear the area.

Many fans later accused the police of reacting too late and said security should have focused on prevention, not force.
