Video. Extreme heat grips southern Europe with red alerts issued

Updated:

Tourists in Vienna are continuing to take traditional Fiaker carriage rides through the historic centre, as authorities study the impact of high temperatures on working horses.

The two-year project, led by the University of Veterinary Medicine and the city officials, will monitor carriage and sport horses across all seasons, measuring vital signs, stress indicators and behaviour.

In Spain, a heatwave since 3 August has triggered red alerts in Andalusia and the Basque Country, where temperatures have reached 44°C.

Croatia remains under a red alert in four regions, with coastal temperatures exceeding 35°C and dangerous inland heat reaching 37°C in Dalmatia.
