Updated:

A powerful explosion at a petrol and LPG station in Rome’s Centocelle district injured at least 25 people, including several police officers and a firefighter.

The blast, which happened during refuelling early Friday, sent thick black smoke into the sky, visible from across the city.

Witnesses said the shock wave hit nearby homes “like an earthquake”.

Eight officers suffered burns in a series of explosions that followed the initial blast. All injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening.

Fire crews worked in intense heat to control the blaze, which spread to nearby vehicles and a law enforcement warehouse.

An investigation is underway.
