Video. Tornado leaves trail of destruction in Puerto Varas

Emergency teams and local authorities are assessing the aftermath of a rare tornado that struck Puerto Varas in southern Chile on Sunday afternoon.

At least 19 people were injured and around 250 homes damaged as the tornado swept through the Los Lagos region, forcing evacuations and causing widespread power outages.

Shelters were damaged, goods scattered in shops, and roofs torn from buildings. The tornado, rated EF-1 by Chile’s Meteorological Service, brought winds of up to 178 kph.

President Gabriel Boric visited the area on Monday, announcing emergency aid and self-reconstruction support for affected families.
