Video. Gaza death toll rises as Israel begins 'Gideon Chariots' offensive

Updated:

Israel has launched its most extensive ground assault in Gaza in months, while announcing limited aid will now be permitted into the besieged territory.

The Israeli military released footage of troops operating in the enclave on Monday, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said a “starvation crisis” could jeopardise the offensive.

Aid access follows weeks of international pressure amid warnings of impending famine after Israel halted all supplies in early March.

Over the weekend, Israeli airstrikes killed more than 100 Palestinians, including children, according to health officials.

The bombardments, part of Israel’s intensified campaign in recent days, struck homes and tents sheltering displaced families, as ceasefire talks continue without a breakthrough.
