Hong Kong’s Cheung Chau island burst into celebration on Monday as the annual Bun Festival got underway with a vibrant parade through its narrow streets.

The event opened with the “Piu Sik” parade, featuring children dressed as folk heroes and deities, elevated on concealed platforms as they were carried through the streets.

The festival dates back over a century and originated as a local response to a deadly plague. Residents offered white steamed buns to deities in a Taoist ritual aimed at driving away illness and misfortune.

The festival will conclude with a midnight bun-scrambling race, where participants scale a tower to collect the highest-scoring buns.
