Israel allowed thousands of Palestinians to return to northern Gaza for the first time in over a year, following a fragile ceasefire with Hamas.

The return, delayed by a dispute over the release of hostages, follows a year-long sheltering in tent camps. Many Palestinians feared permanent displacement. Hamas called the return a victory. The ceasefire aims to end the deadly conflict, triggered by Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack, and facilitate the release of hostages and prisoners.
