Canary Islands migrant arrivals

Video. Weekend sees significant migrant landings in Canary Islands

Updated:

Nearly 500 illegal migrants arrived in the Canary Islands over the weekend, with five fishing boats carrying 296 people landing between Saturday and Sunday.

One boat arrived in La Gomera, while four reached El Hierro. Among the migrants were individuals from diverse countries, including Mali, Senegal, Burkina Faso, and six Yemenis. The Atlantic route is increasingly used, with more Syrians present due to tighter controls on the Mediterranean route. Several minors arrived, and Mauritanian canoes are becoming more common than larger Senegalese ones.
