Iraqi Kurds celebrated their Nowruz New Year festival in Akre, in the country's northern autonomous Kurdistan region. 

Iraqi Kurds celebrated their Nowruz New Year festival in Akre, in the country's northern autonomous Kurdistan region. 

"Nowruz is a national symbol, a folk heritage and a festival", says Fatima, dressed in a traditional green Kurdish dress. 

Nowruz means 'new day' and marks the first day of Spring. The festival is celebrated by some 300 million people around the world.
