Mauna Loa, on the US archipelago's largest island, erupted on 27 November and continues to spew rivers of molten rock on its northern slope. 

It stretches 17 kilometres from base to summit and takes up half the entire surface area of Hawaii’s Big Island, the US Geological Survey says.
