The prime ministers of Belgium, France and Luxembourg addressed the parliament as part of the ceremony as the three countries are the body's host nations.

Members of the European Parliament on Tuesday marked 70 years since its first assembly back in 1952.

Among those who attended the special anniversary session were France's Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.

Elisabeth Borne called the European Parliament the "heart of democracy" and a "scathing denial of destructive attempts" such as in Ukraine.
