Updated:

Brave swimmers took a dip in minus 19-degree Celsius temperatures - with the wind chill dropping that to about minus 25.

Australia's Antarctic researchers take a traditional icy plunge at Mawson station to mark midwinter - the shortest day and longest night of the year - which is a turning point in the calendar for those living on the frozen continent.

Residents of Australia's most remote station currently see no sun throughout the day, with the next sunrise not expected for another week.
