On Sunday, the entire western flanks of both cinder cones of the volcano collapsed, showing the inner part of the lava. In was the highest and strongest since the beginning of the eruption spewing around 50 metres (164 feet) high.

Record breaking numbers of visitors travelled to see the erupting volcano near Iceland's capital Reykjavik over the weekend.

More than 5,000 people visited the area of the eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula near the town of Grindavik.
