The Basel carnival started this morning at 4 am with the traditional Morgenstraich. In the old town of Basel, all the streetlights and other lights are cut down after the countdown at 4 am. Then the procession of lanterns starts moving.
Thousands of people watched the parade of lanterns accompanied by traditional Piccolo and drum march music walking through the old town of Basel, Switzerland.
Traditionally, the motives of the lanterns cover all kind of political and social issues that moved the population during the past year.
