Seen from space, Hurricane harvey looked monsterous as it hit the American mainland, but as it sweeps inland it has already been downgraded from a level 4 to a level 1 event, a mere Tropical Storm.

It moved slowly but powerfully across Texas on Saturday, (August 26), initially downgraded to a Category 2 storm, but only after hammering the coast with life-threatening winds and the prospect of catastrophic flooding.

The hurricane, the most powerful storm in over a decade to hit the mainland United States, first made landfall northeast of Corpus Christi, Texas, around late on Friday, (August 25), with maximum winds of 130 miles per hour, (209 km per hour).

The town of Rockport appeared to be one of the hardest hit by Harvey’s punch, hours after the mayor told anyone staying to write their names on their arms for identification in case of death or injury.

The storm was expected to meander across the coast and up through Louisiana for days, with forecasts for storm surges of up to 13 fee,t (4 meters), and over 3 feet, (90 cm), of rain.
